The axle (also called the axle) is connected to the frame (or load-bearing body) through the suspension, and wheels are installed at both ends. The vertical load on the frame is transmitted to the wheels through the axle; the rolling resistance, driving force, braking force and lateral force on the wheels and their bending moments and torques are transmitted to the suspension and frame through the axle, so The role of the axle is to transmit the various forces between the frame and the wheels and the resulting bending moment and torque.
According to the structure type of the suspension, the axle can be divided into two types: integral type and disconnected type. The disconnected axle is a movable joint structure, which is used in conjunction with an independent suspension; the middle of the integral axle is an integral rigid solid or hollow beam (shaft), which is mostly used with a non-independent suspension. Most modern cars do not actually have an axle between the left and right wheels, but are connected to the frame or body through their respective suspensions. However, they are still customarily called disconnected axles.
According to the movement mode and function of the wheels on the axle, the axle can be divided into four types: steering axle, drive axle, steering drive axle and support axle. The steering bridge and the support bridge belong to the driven bridge. Generally, the front axle of a car is mostly a steering axle, and the rear axle or the middle and rear axles are mostly drive axles. The front axle of off-road vehicles and some cars is both a steering axle and a drive axle, so it is called a steering drive axle.
The middle or rear axle of some single-axle drive three-axle cars (6 × 2 cars) is the support axle. The axles on the trailer are all support bridges.
The front axle is a device that transmits the all-directional force between the frame and the front wheels and the bending moment and torque generated by it.
Front steering axle
The front axle is mostly a driven axle, also known as a steering axle, which is generally evenly distributed at the front end of the vehicle, so it is called the front axle. It is connected to the steering system by the steering knuckle. The steering force output by the steering gear can be transmitted to the wheels to realize the steering of the vehicle. It not only supports the sprung mass at the front of the vehicle and bears vertical loads, but also various longitudinal forces, lateral forces and related moments.
Front axle
As the main part of the front axle, generally made of medium carbon steel by die forging and heat treatment. Its section is I-shaped or tubular.
In order to improve the torsional strength, there is a thickened part near both ends of the front axle into a fist shape, in which there is a through hole, and the king pin is inserted into this hole. The middle part is bent downward into a concave shape, the purpose of which is to lower the position of the engine, thereby reducing the center of mass of the car; expanding the driver's field of vision; and reducing the angle between the transmission shaft and the transmission output shaft.
steering knuckle
The steering knuckle is the hinge of the wheel steering, it is a fork. The upper and lower forks have two coaxial holes for installing the king pin, and the steering knuckle journal is used to install the wheel. The two ears of the pin hole on the steering knuckle are connected to the fist-shaped parts at both ends of the front axle through the king pin, so that the front wheel can deflect a certain angle around the king pin to turn the car. In order to reduce wear, a bronze bushing is pressed into the steering knuckle pin hole, and the bushing is lubricated by injecting grease into the oil nozzle installed on the steering knuckle. In order to make the steering flexible, a bearing 9 is installed between the lower lug of the steering knuckle and the fist part of the front axle. An adjusting shim is also installed between the upper ear of the steering knuckle and the fist-shaped part to adjust the gap between them.
kingpin
The function of the kingpin is to articulate the front axle and the steering knuckle, so that the steering knuckle swings around the kingpin to realize the steering of the wheels. A groove is cut in the middle of the kingpin. During installation, the kingpin fixing bolt 5 is matched with the groove on it to fix the kingpin in the fist hole of the front axle. The king pin and the pin hole on the steering knuckle are in dynamic fit to achieve steering. A common form of the kingpin is shown in Figure 5.
Hub
The wheel hub is supported on a journal at the outer end of the steering knuckle via two tapered roller bearings. The tightness of the bearing can be adjusted by the adjusting nut (installed on the outer end of the bearing). The outer end of the hub is covered with a stamped metal cover, and the inner end is equipped with an oil seal. The brake backing plate is fixed to the steering knuckle together with the dust cover.

Application range of gearbox

The gearbox is a mechanical device used to change the torque and speed of the engine to adapt to different road conditions and workloads. It is usually composed of gears, gears, clutches, etc. in the transmission system. It is widely used in automobile, engineering machinery, ship, aircraft and other fields.
